AT THE HEART OF MANAGEMENT DECISIONS

The financial director plays a triple role : creates, implements and develops the most effective information and financial management system for the company.

Occupying a key job in the company, the financial director closely works with the general management in order to define the financial strategy that will allow the company to carry through its development policy.

Activities

The strategist of the company, guardian of the financial balance

This function is only fully applicable when working in large corporations of more than 1000 employees.

The financial argument is more and more at the heart of the management decisions, in the same way as : financing, investments, the development of the group. The financial director is constantly in relation with the banking world, financial specialists and administrators.

The financial functions imply close collaboration with the general management, as it is the responsibility of the financial director to financially enlighten the choices of developments, to define the financial strategy and implement the required tools.

Concretely, for the financial director it is a question of :

  1. optimising the management of the company's treasury, that is to say, provide the company with the funds which will allow it to ensure current operations and at the same time making sure that the money coming from the company is used for the better ;
  2. trying to apprehend the future by managing the funds needed for the growth of the company : decide upon the financial investments, in the short, medium and long terms, that will serve to realise the strategic choices and the general policies of the company (Stock Exchange operations and change).

The financial director is also responsible for the company's financing plan for a given period. A plan that he/she will draw-up after having evaluated the estimated the company's receipts and expenses. Balance sheet, provisional budget, general accounting, analytical accounting are the information tools that the financial director must master.

Thanks to the global vision he/she has of the firm, the financial director mainly watches over the financial balance of the firm and henceforth ensures its financial autonomy.

Work conditions

Especially in the large firms

The financial director carries out his/her functions in large sized companies and mainly in the following activity sectors : the industry (in particular, metallurgical industry , mechanics, electric construction, electronics), the BTP (public buildings and work sector), the transports, commerce as well as banks and insurance companies.

Responsible for the accounting and financial departments, the financial director controls, within the company, a team of top-level financial specialists, people responsible for the treasury, specialists in export financing, international credit specialists. He/she plays the role of privileged  speaker with the heads of other departments (commercial sector for example).

Outside the company, he/she is in contact with bankers, shareholders, subsidiaries, the Stock Exchange and all public and private organisations that are likely to participate in financing the investments.

Career-promotion

Towards General Management

The job of financial director only concerns confirmed executives that have in general 10 years of experience in different financial fields, acquired in a company and/or in an audit office.

The evolution of the career generally consists in occupying financial director's positions in more important firms. The financial management is one of the best access roads to the general management.

Required skills

Good relational skills and rigour

These capacities to negotiate go together with good contact skills and nothing short of almost absolute rigour. He/she must be cautious but, at the same time, inspire confidence, and be able to take rapid decisions while remaining conscious of the risks.

This profession requires a top-level training and a sound knowledge of English and computer techniques.

Openings-Salaries

Highly valued professions

The APEC survey shows that the job market has deteriorated, even if 'financial management' remains the key function of the company. The analysis of the offers reveal that in 1995 the market had stabilised to around 10 offers per month.
The salary of the financial director varies enormously depending on the firms. It is generally between 60 000 to 120 000 Euros per annum. It can however, come down to 36 000 Euros for a young holder of a diploma who comes from a 'Grande Ecole' and rise to 200 000 Euros for an experienced executive working in a large firm.
