JOINT GUARDIANSHIP THESIS WITH A FOREIGN UNIVERSITY
The system for the international joint guardianship for the thesis as defined by the order dated January 6th
An agreement must be established between the two establishments concerned; this may be for:
- a specific agreement concluded for a thesis ;
- a "convention-cadre" specifying the general conditions, each thesis being the object of an application agreement.
In these two cases, this agreement must be addressed to the concerned 'Ecole Doctorale' that will handle the application.
The student must normally be registered in the two Universities. As for the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis, the general registration rules for the thesis will apply:
* if the student is still not registered, he must submit an authorisation request for registration (as well as a dispensation request if the student is a holder of a foreign diploma) in support of the agreement project.
The principle is that of reciprocity: the thesis is the object of a sole defence in one of the two establishments, following which the title of Doctor is given in France, and it must also be the same in other countries. This title may be given, either by the delivery of a joint diploma, or by the delivery of a doctorate diploma in each of the two countries (terms to be specified in the agreement).
The conditions for the defence, in whatever establishment they take place, must respect the defined rules as per the order dated April 25th, 2002 related to doctoral studies. However, "when the rules applicable to the doctorate studies in the concerned countries include incompatible aspects amongst them, the French establishments are authorized to depart from the dispositions of the Order dated April 25th 2002 afore mentioned on these particular aspects, to be in accordance with the dispositions of the present Order and the conditions as defined by the agreement" (Order dated January 6th, 2005 art. 4).
Preferably use the joint guardianship model de convention (agreement model) established by the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis.
In the particular case concerning Quebec, use the formulaire spécial (special form) annexed to the 'Franco-Québécoise convention-cadre' dated October 1996. For the joint guardianship students registering within the annual invitations to tenders of the Franco-Italian University (UFI), use the model imposed by this establishment.
In all other case (for example an agreement proposed by a partner university), check that the text is in accordance with all the dispositions related to the Order dated January 6th 2005.
NB: The joint guardianship agreement does not hold any clause related to travel costs, but it may allow the possibility to solicit subsidies within specific invitations to tenders.
